Utah 2002 HOBY Leadership
Seminar
Next
month a whole new set of HOBY Ambassadors will gather at Aspen Grove for
yet another HOBY seminar. The 2002 seminar is scheduled for May 9th -
11th, so the HOBY staff
has been busy with last minute preparations.
Many high school sophomores
are already signed up to attend the seminar. Check out the latest list
at the HOBY Utah Leadership Seminar page:
http://www.hobyutah.org/seminar/index.html
Find the student who is attending from your high school and give them
a little pre-seminar HOBY welcome. You can give them an idea of what to
expect and get them excited about the seminar.
We once again have several excellent panelists and speakers coming from
around the state
to participate in the seminar. So our agenda is slowly being finalized.
You can view the current agenda at
the HOBY Utah Leadership Seminar page also:

And of course, we are
once again formulating another outstanding group of HOBY staff, counselors,
and junior counselors.
The HOBY Ambassador
The
International HOBY office has started publishing The HOBY Ambassador once
again. The HOBY Ambassador used to be a newsletter that was produced quarterly
and mailed out to all alumni. Then they stopped reproducing it for a while
because of the high cost. In January they started publishing again, but
this time in electronic form. To view the lastest issues, or to join the
electronic mailing list, visit The HOBY Ambassador webpage at:
http://www.hoby.org/alumni/ambassador.htm
You can view the latest news from the international office and see
what other HOBY alumni from around the globe are doing. They also have
some great ideas for activities, service projects, scholarships, etc.
Notice a Familiar Voice During the Olympics...
Some of you may remember Pamela Morton. She was a counselor at the
leadership seminar last year (the one with the cute baby!) and has been
involved with HOBY for many years. You may also know her as a local DJ
for 94.5 KVFX in Logan. Last month, during the 2002 Winter Olympics Game,
the rest of the world got to know Pamela as she experienced the Olympics
a little more closely than most of us. She was supposed to be volunteering
as a “spotter” for the Soldier Hollow venue (relaying athlete’s numbers
on their uniforms to the announcers booth). Instead, she was given the
exciting opportunity to be a broadcaster, along side Peter Graves, for
the Olympic cross-country skiing events. Read about her experience here:

The Literacy Project
Amy Oliver, President of Region #8, has been involved in an excellent
service project to improve literacy among the homeless. Here's her description
of the project:
It's called The Literacy Project, and our slogan is "Keep Literacy Alive."
What we are doing is collecting books and magazines that people don't
want and we're donating them to the Homeless Shelter. The main reason
why is because the reason that the illiteracy rate is so high in Utah
is that many Homeless people do not know how to read, or they haven't
done it in such a long time that they can't really remember how. And the
worst part is that when the parents can't read, their children aren't
taught to read. Also, the Homeless Shelters are trying to keep their residents
informed on what is going on in the world, and magazines are a great way
to keep people informed...also, books are a great way to help people be
more intellectual, which can help them when they are searching for a job.
If you or someone you know wants to conduct a project like this, I can
email a copy of flyers I made, and I can tell you more about keeping hours
and how to get people to do it and all that stuff...we're doing great
so far; we've collected over three-hundred books and magazines so far,
and we have another pick-up.
